Budget cuts? Work piling up? Lists? Processing Shortcuts? --Now Furloughs?

- Either copy this sample letter (in order to paste it later), or just read it as a sample:
Dear Commissioner Astrue,
I have recently learned that you have limited replacement hiring for Social Security field offices to one new employee for every eight who retire. At that rate, many of our offices would disappear and others rendered ineffective.
I have also been advised that you were quoted in the news saying that SSA employees may have to be furloughed if Congress further reduces the agency's budget.
Neither of these plans is in the public's best interests and is certainly not beneficial to either the Social Security Administration or its employees.
The drastic reductions in staff resulting from your 1:8 replacement plan will wipe out most of our offices. We don't have enough staff to do the work now. In fact, a significant increase in field office personnel is needed to meet service needs.
Sending SSA workers home because of proposed budget cuts is a misplaced priority. Instead, you should reschedule the costly new disability program changes you have proposed until adequate funding to maintain current operations is provided.
Sincerely,
